How can a
blood test show
who the father is?
During pregnancy, small fragments of the baby's DNA pass into the mother's bloodstream. The laboratory reads that DNA from her blood sample.

A standard blood draw from the mother's arm is enough for the laboratory to work with.
It is compared with the possible father's DNA
His sample is tested alongside hers to see whether the DNA matches. Blood is preferred. Hair or nails can be used instead.
Nothing is taken from the womb
Invasive tests such as amniocentesis collect a sample from inside the womb with a needle. This test does not.

How many weeks pregnant you are
The test is available from 8 weeks. If you are unsure of your dates, the scan will confirm them.
Blood, hair or nails
Blood from the possible father is the most reliable sample. If he cannot attend, we can test 8 hairs with the roots attached, or 8 nail clippings cut with a new clipper.
Twins, IVF, donor egg or surrogacy

Is the test safe for my baby?
The test uses blood taken from the mother's arm and from the possible father. No sample is taken from the womb or from the baby.
How early in pregnancy can I do it?
From 8 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound scan is done first to confirm how far along you are.
How accurate is the result?
The testing laboratory reports 99% accuracy. The doctor can explain what your result means.
How long does the result take?

Does the possible father have to come?
No. A blood sample from him is preferred, but the test can also be done discreetly with his hair or nail sample. We need 8 hairs with the roots attached, or 8 nail clippings cut with a new clipper.
Is a hair or nail sample as reliable as blood?
Blood is the most reliable sample. DNA cannot always be extracted from hair or nails, so there is a chance the sample cannot be used. Ask us on WhatsApp how to collect it properly and what it costs.
